Our Luminarias

Starla is a friend that is currently battling cancer.

As you all know I am heading up a team for Relay For Life (American Cancer Society) in memory of my Grandparents and a cousin Gordon Jeppson. I am so excited for the relay to get here because it is going to be a blast but also because we have been raising money in memory of these wonderful people who did not survive cancer. One of the things that happen is called a Luminaria Ceremony. This is where bags are lit to line the track for the night and each bag has a persons name on it who has had cancer or has cancer. They are to honor those who have cancer or have survived cancer and In memory of those who did not win their fight with cancer. During the ceremony each name that is on a bag is read. It is a very touching ceremony. If you would like to come to the ceremony it will be at the KHS track at 9:15pm Friday June 4th. They are $5.00 per bag and you can let me know what you want it to say or decorate your own. All of the money goes directly to the American Cancer Society.



These are our loved ones that we are honoring at this event.
My grandpa died of bladder cancer in February of 2000.

Tyler had a tumor in his kidney when he was 5 and is now a sophomore in high school. He is doing great.

Gordon died of bone cancer one month before his 24 birthday in 1985. He went through two rounds of chemotherapy and many tests.


Ella was diagnosed in 2004 when she was 20 months old with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She was “high risk” because of the high levels of cancer cells in her blood. She did active chemotherapy for about 8 months, and continued on a treatment plan for about another year after that. She immediately went into remission and has been clean ever since. The doctors consider the 5-year mark to be the measurement for being cured. Her 5-year mark was last May, 2009, and she is doing wonderfully in school, athletics, dancing, and art.

Grandma died of Gall Bladder cancer when I was 12.

Uncle CF had colon cancer a few years ago they removed part of his intestines and he went through treatment. He is now doing great.

Gordon died of bone cancer at age 23.

Travis our nephew was diagnosed in 2008 with a low-grade astrocytoma in the brain stem. It is generally inoperable due to the location. However, a surgeon safely removed a portion of it in July, 2008. He underwent 6 weeks of radiation in the fall of 2008 and has had an MRI every 6 months since. Every MRI has been better than the last. During his last MRI, the doctors reported that the tumor has reduced to 40% of the original size and downgraded in malignancy. He is doing great.
